My horror story was a bus ride from East Croydon to Heathrow. I left a
couple of hours early so I could hang around the observation deck and
take pictures, but construction on the M25 had pushed traffic onto the
bus route and we proceeded at a crawl through Kingston. The bus
schedule was science fiction and apparently had been for some time; the
bus company knew it, the local passengers knew it, but there was no
indication of it at the bus station. People who wanted to catch planes
were doing panicky things with their cell phone if they had one; I
didn't, so I just tried to relax since there was nothing I could do at
that point. I made to pre-checkin security at United Airlines minutes
before my flight was due to depart and explained my situation; they
speed-walked me through interrogation and check-in and onto the
concourse, and I boarded the plane. I think we sat and waited an hour
to push back because of problems with radar at Shannon ... or maybe that
was a different trip.

I'd agree that other than spending the night at a hotel within walking
distance of the airport (is there such a thing at Heathrow?), there's
nothing that can be done to guarantee that stuff like this won't happen.
