Keep away from Volendam it's just for tourists. Visit Hoorn or
Enkhuizen instead.

Volendam is a tourist rip off place. There's little to see or do other
than have your wallet emptied.
You can get to both Hoorn and Enkhuizen by train every 30 minutes from
the Central station in A'dam. The journey time to Enkhuizen is about
30 minutes.
You can do a triangular trip between Hoorn, Medemblik and
Enkhuizen.Hoorn to Medemblik by steam train, Medemblik to Enkhuizen by
pre-war ferry and Enkhuizen to Hoorn by normal train. All three towns
are nice and have lots to see/visit. Medemblik has a 15th century
moated castle. Enkhuizen has a large open air museum, which you can
easily spend half a day visiting. The town is 17th century and one
time site of the warehouses of the Dutch East Indies Company. The
buildings are now used by the Zuiderzee Zee Museum which contains
amongst other things traditional Dutch wooden boats preserve in a
large dry dock and exhibitions relating to the way people lived around
the Zuiderzee Zee. The Open Air museum consists of 70+ buildings from
around the IJsselmeer/Zuider Zee, which have been demolished and
re-erected as a typical Zuiderzee town. The buildings include a boat
yard, a boat harbour with traditional sailing boats moored in it, a
working steam laundry & fish smokery, a windmill and much else.
In the town are moored up to a hundred traditional Dutch sailing
boats, which are used for charter work.
