Hi,

Ferry tickets are usally available right before departure for
deck/space on local ferries, even international ones. Croatia ferries
are fine, albeit slow. depending on when you are travelling there are
plenty of resources for accomodation online. In additon pretty much any
island will have local office offering cheap (I guess around 20 euro a
night, this was in 2003, maybe a bit more now) for backbackers.

South Croatia - Dalamtia - Hvar, Dubrovnik, Mljet, and Korcula are the
nicest islands.

But that's just my personal opinion.
