Two free days in January
I have a railpass which covers Italy, Switzerland and Germany, and I
have two free days: January 3 - 5th. I'm trying to figure out what to do
with them. I have to drop my bf off at the airport in Milan for a 7:30am
flights on the 3rd, and my flight home leaves Zurich on the 5th at 10:30am.
My first thought was to see the Neuschwanstein castle near Munich, but
it seems that most trains from Milan (or Zurich, as an intermediary
point) go there by way of Austria, and my railpass doesn't include Austria.
I tried looking at train schedules that arrive in Zurich by 6:30 (take
an overnight from someone else, rather than HAVING to get back to Zurich
on the 4th, and get a hotel room), but I guess the train schedules that
far in advance are not available yet.
We are spending December 25 - 3rd in Italy (Rome and Tuscany) so kinda
have that covered. Can you, the good folks of rte make some suggestions?
Thanks
-Holly

Travelling from Zürich to Füssen is usually over Bregenz-Lindau and
including a short portion over Austrian ÖBB. But as that short portion is
26km only you'll probably find that it's not much to worry about. You've
to pay for an inexpensive ticket St.Margrethen-Lindau.

Do you not want to stay in Zurich? It's a lovely city to spend a day. You
could spend the day shoping in Milan then take the train up to Lugano then
Lucerne or Zurich. Or you could spend two days at a mountain spa.

We started out in Switzerland, so pretty much have that covered already
(except for the Romansch-speaking SE canton). I forgot to mention that
Not a shopper, so Milan is just a drop-off point, to me. I'm just
trying to find a good use of the Germany part of my railpass, mostly.
Thanks!!

Schedules are available. Look at www.sbb.ch You can choose the language at
the top line of the homepage.
I would recommend taking the Cisalpino from Milan to Brig on the 3rd. From
there go to Zermatt and the Matterhorn. On the 4th, travel to Interlaken via
Brig and then go on the Brunig Line to Lucerne and stay the night there.
Lucerne to Zurich Airport is only about an hour and there are plenty of
trains to get you there in time for your flight.

Venice and maybe Vienna?
Seriously, Germany is a bit of a hike. Why not hang around some of the
prettier parts of northern Italy instead?
