It's the result of archeology being at one time exclusively the subject of
classical scholars. It's a very poor science. You can't blame the BBC for that.
Tony Robinson's Channel 4 archeology programmes are very similar to the BBC's.

The BBC had archeology programmes and series long before Channel 4 existed.

Blame archeologists for the **** they talk and write not TV.

Time Team was done much better than this (at least until they dumbed it
down in the final series and added a redundant second presenter).

The Stonehenge programme was awful.

TT was well past its sell by date by the time of the final series.

Maybe they could make a series about Time Team clearing up the mess they left on
most sites. The results of their digging at Castle Howard wasn't tidied up until
quite recently.
