>In some 50 years of civilian flying (starting with a now non-existent hop from Lympe to Beauvais, and a 4-hour prop flight from London to Spain with good old Clarkson's!) I/we must have been incredibly lucky. Discounting some delays of, say, up to 2 hours or so, our only ever problem was missing baggage in Turkey which was then found (still on the plane) within the hour. We have never been seriously mucked about with, anywhere. Our worst delays (2 hours) were with Italia.[/color]

I travelled by air every week for long periods over 38 years. I was
seriously mucked about by KLM countless times. If KLM thought they
didn't have enough passengers flights would be cancelled with no
warning. When flying to Amsterdam I learnt to check if the plane had
departed from Amsterdam before leaving for the airport. I lost baggage
several times at Schiphol. The airport staff responsible for lost
luggage were often very rude to passengers without any justification.
In the end my lost luggage always turned up. KLM delivered it to my
house.
Trying to use Flying Dutchman frequent flyer points was a nightmare.
On the plus side KLM staff were almost always friendly and helpful.
Schiphol lost more luggage than any other airport some years. Perhaps
the lost property staff were overworked.
When I broke a leg in Germany, KLM refused to fly me back to
Amsterdam, where as Swissair not only flew me back but reserved a
whole row at no extra charge so that I would be comfortable.
