They don't conduct an Inquisition to determine one's religious
beliefs. People go to admire the architecture, the art, or even the
flora and fauna, in addition to religious purposes.
However, the permits are limited to 10 a day for general visitors and
100 per day for Orthodox "pilgrims." And Orthodox clergy are over and
above those limits.
The need to obtain permits from the monastic authorities, and
therefore the need for a certain amount of pre-planning, tends to weed
out casual visitors.
