Predefinito Int'l driving permit

I will be driving my father-in-law's Hungarian-registerd car around
Hungary and Croatia soon. I have a British Columbia (Canada) driver's
license.

I know that IDPs are "accpeted" in those countries but is the IDP
really needed anymore? If the police stop me will they hassle me if I
don't have one?

The "international driving permit" is only a validated translation of you
driving permit which remains your actual driving permit.

I think that you're going to have to Google this from your home country. I
am only getting UK links which (of course) only answer the question from a
Euro perspective

E.g: Hungary - "All valid UK driving licences should be accepted.
Acceptance of driving licences that are not of the European Communities
model cannot be guaranteed" without actually saying if there are other's
that are guaranted.

Croatia says "Required for car hire", but that may have changed since
joining the EU (last week)

I needed one when I went to Serbia, but neither the car hire company, nor
the nice policeman who insisted that I bought some of his lottery tickets,
wanted to see it
