No there's a lot more happening. There are a lot of sporting
events, public transport runs a Sunday service and a lot
of store actually start their sales that day.

I wouldn't waste my money being here in London on Christmas Day,
everything is closed while everybody attends boring family meals
where its traditional to eat large amounts of bland turkey and
heavy pudding that almost nobody likes. That's tradition for you.
If I wouldn't get written out of the will I would be in some
remote cottage somewhere ignoring the whole dismal procedure.
That day aside do see a good pantomime, the kids will soon learn
where to join in.
"oh no they wont!" :-)

probably too late to book anywhere desirable. There's more chance
of snow there of course, but it tends to be more reliable later
in the winter. There will be rain.
The best thing would be to see if English country Cottages have
anything left in the area.

There isn't on Xmas day. The weather wont be a problem at
Christmas, typically cool, might rain a bit. Maybe crisp and
bright, you cant predict it. Don't see why transport should be
problem except for Xmas day, when it will be.

Or during the intermittent strikes, or when the weather is hot, or at
rush hour, or if you are on a budget.

Strikes? Pretty rare nowadays. The northern line stopped for
safety concerns the other day, don't recollect any others in
recent times. Hot shouldn't be a problem at Xmas, on a budget is,
London isn't cheap.

This might turn out to fit in really well. Current plan looks like
we'll have the day of the 27th free, and will be based in Bury St.
Edmunds; so I was thinking of renting a car for the day (presumably I
can find a car rental somewhere near Bury) and heading to Cambridge, to
look at the college buildings, eat a pub lunch, and browse in
bookstores. If anyone has any specific recommendations for a day-trip
to Cambridge in late December, I'd be grateful. (And thanks to everyone
for the helpful suggestions -- this thread has really been a huge help.)
