Predefinito Sardinia recommendations

Just trawling for some more recommendations for our Sardinia trip at the
end of August. We'll spend the first three nights in and around Alghero
(booked at the Hotel San Francesco which is in the old town) and looking
for something quite different for the rest of the trip. Jeremy H., Tom
P, and Congo K. (and perhaps others!) gave good suggestions- and I'm
still thinking about them. Looking for something as different as
possible from Alghero and environs, but needs to be accessible by public
transport. Thinking I should read "Sea and Sardinia" by D H Lawrence-
aparently he did the whole trip around the island by bus. (A steam train
ride looks like a must-do though!)

I read Lawrence's book on the Etruscans before my trip to Tarquinia
and vicinity, and it really enhanced the experience.

I've only been to Sardinia once, accompanying my husband on a business
trip. I took the train to Golfo Aranci. There were lots of really nice
walks around there, and the countryside was beautiful on the way. I
don't know how it compares to other parts of Sardegna, and since it
was the off season, I don't know what it would be like when there are
lots of tourists. I got the impression that it was not a deluxe resort
area. However, it's very near the very deluxe Costa Smeralda.

I'm off to the bookshop later!

Thanks- we're definitely looking for something a lot quieter than
Alghero. Based on previous reports, it looks like that's still possible
to find on the island, even during peak season.

I was going to suggest that you might try Cagliari as a contrast to Alghero,
but if you're looking for something quieter it won't quite fit the bill.

Probably not. Definitely a place to visit, but we like the idea of
somewhere 'urban' and somewhere more remote- to the extent it's possible
with public transport.
