I've never understood the purpose of the strikes in Italy. They don't
last long enough to accomplish anything. (Six hours is typical.) Their
stated motives tend to be vague and theoretical. There doesn't seem to
be any collective bargaining before the strike, as they are announced
weeks in advance. They are heavily concentrated, as I said in the
summer, but also near elections, as they mostly seem to be motivated
by party politics rather than issues affecting the workers. Also, I
think most of the demonstrators are party hacks rather than workers.
When people go on strike in the US they tend to have a very clear goal
and they stay out long enough to have a chance of accomplishing it.
And there is serious bargaining before the strike to head it off,
because it is bound to damage both the employer and the employees.
