Predefinito What are Water Chestnuts called in French?

I just used my last can of water chestnuts, so I took a trip to the tiny
Chinese market in Carcassonne this morning to get some more. Well, I
guess I must not have bought them there since the woman there said they
never had them. She knew the Enlgish term but not any French word for
them. (Nor does my dictionary and the label on the can I had was in
English.) Now I can't figure out where I bought them - it may have been
in Spain or it may have been on a trip to Dublin last fall. But not
knowing what to ask for makes the search ever so much harder!

So, anyone know they are called in French?

The key to these things is to use the scientific name as an
intermediary, since folk-names for species are a translator's
nightmare. Thus:

1) Find scientific name => "Trapa natans",
(<http://plants.usda.gov:8080/plants/profile?symbol=TRNA>)

2) Google "(scientific name) francais" => Mâcre, Châtaigne d'eau
<http://perso.wanadoo.fr/erick.dronnet/trapa_natans1.htm>

3) Google candidates to establish preferred usage, which seems to be
« Châtaigne d'eau », yum yum.

Yes, I had tried that strategy - which I've used for garden plants many
times - but didn't come up with "mâcre". Thanks!

Well, I'm a French native speaker and I love cooking (and hence know
lots of names for lots of cooking-related stuff), but I *never* heard
or read the word "mâcre" before.
