Indeed- very large differences depending on when you travel, and how
flexible you can be about booking in advance. And big differences
between certain routes and train operators. Manchester to London with
Virgin Trains- open standard return is around £180, but most people
could use a standard saver return at £55 (can't leave during morning and
afternoon (ex London only) peak services.) Book ahead, and it's easy to
find £22 tickets, such as the one I have for next week. On Virgin, first
class is quite nice (at seat drinks, snack, full breakfast etc.) and you
can book an advance 1st ticket for around the same price as a standard
saver!
