I do all of the former and a lot of the latter. When not doing the latter,
I've learned they have pretty good bread in Scandinavia generally.

In a year and I half there I kept finding new kinds and all were delicious.
Now I make my own to avoid the mixture of pallid flour, water, and
chemicals so popular in the US. Even non-white bread here has lists of
chemicals in it.

Never heard of something like that here in Germany. What you usually have
is a "Familienstammbuch", that's a book where you collect all important
documents regarding your family (birth certificate, certificate of
marriage...).

Depends on your status. English people living legally in Germany can vote
in European elections (at the same place where the Germans vote), but not
in national elections. For that, you'll need a Germany citizienship - which
did become much easier to obtain some years ago, for most European
nationalities you can legally keep your old passport and nationality and
get a German one, too.

At least in Germany you have to have a medical-insurence that is valid for
Germany, otherwise you won't get a visa. They have short-term insurances
for people visiting up to a few weeks, if you stay longer, you have to get
a normal German health-insurance. If you're employed at a Germany company,
you'll have one anyway, otherwise you have to find a private insurance that
insures you (can be difficult if you are already older and not in perfect
health).

It's not as bad as you point it. Yes, there was a demonstration by
right-wing Hooligans against Salafists. There was a bit of a quarrel in
which a police car was turned on the side. And drunken yobs trying to get
the police into a fight.
Things like this can happen after a normal Saturday-afternoon
football-games as well.

There were no Salafis who did fight. It's a rather small group in Germany,
a few hundred maybe. Most of the Turkish Muslims here don't like the
Salafists, and at the Hooligan-demonstration the kurds and right-wing turks
did march together with the hooligans.

It's not a thing that effects you in normal everyday life, ordinary people
normally don't get cought up in these things. It's more like a pub-brawl,
those who get involved want to get involved.

It's possible that the flour you use is from GM grain and has added chemicals
too, including pesticide residues.

register to prove that you are still alive. UK must be one of the few places
that pays a state pension without requiring annual proof that the recipient is
still alive.

In the UK some people don't even have a passport. Once you don't travel
abroad, you don't need one.
They don't have a register-office either. If you want to open a bank
account, you bring something like your last gas bill.

You register, obtain a copy of a driving licence and a passport in the local
town hall in The Netherlands. It is all very efficient.

There's no requirement to own a passport but photo ID is now required

In Italy most people don't have a passport if they do not need to travel
outside the EU. For that an identity card suffices. And avoids/avoided
to have to pay the yearly stamp on the passport.

Pastry, too! I grew up in Minnesota (with a large Scandinavian
population). I actually came to believe the talent for baking cakes and
pastries may be genetic. We'd be served have something wonderful when
visiting a friend of my mother's, she'd beg and receive the recipe, but
the results were never the same when she made it.

Much of it is bought at health food stores where they generally have a
strong aversion to unnatural foods.

Yes, I had a very reasonably priced travel medical policy with American
Express when I was traveling - it covered everything, including
repatriation and even a travel companion in the event of REALLY serious
illness. However, it only covered a trip of six months or less.

When I was teaching German, I used to take some German Christmas cookies to
school for my students. Some of them wanted recipes, so I shared those,
too. I only knew one whose mother tried one, but he said they didn't taste
like mine. She hadn't had any marjoram, which those cookies needed. I know
there are some Scandinavian baked goods use that, too. Norwegian, I think,
because at least one I learned came from a family with Norwegian ancestry.

In UK state issued I/D cards don't exist. UK passports for adults are valid for
ten years.

That's what they want the customers to believe. Dutch CA tests on so called
organic wines showed more chemicals added than are added to most normal wines.

There is no such thing as "German" bread. Each region has different
kinds of bread. In Bavaria bread often contains a lot of caraway, an
acquired taste for me.

It was a group tour. The places we stayed were generally nice. The second
time they had this weiners and beans stuff as main course, I went back to
my hotel and skipped supper. Thin fish soup was even worse.

So the tour saved money on the food. Your experience of France is about as
typical as Cathy's experience of European food. Next time blame the tour not the
country.

IME almost all German Bread's an acquired taste for me. I like my bread to
be soft and fluffy, not so dense you can use it as roof tiles.

It may "taste" nicer than other countries bread but I just can't abide the
texture

A lot of countries have "tasteless white stuff" bread. I've seen it in a
French supermarket and think it was called "Pain pour toast". The
British eat a lot of it too. It's common in the Outer Hebrides where it
shipped from Glasgow and takes several days to come.

M&S in the Netherlands import it from UK. An English food shop that used to be
in Scheveningen said that imported from UK white sliced bread and toilet paper,
(not a lot of difference) were their best selling products.
