Predefinito 'BIRD FLU: TRAVEL INDUSTRY PREPARES FOR WORST AS CASES AND WARNINGS INCREASE'

The global travel industry is beginning to prepare for the worst as the
full implications of a bird flu pandemic - or even the widespread fear
of one - begin to sink in.

For business owners and employess alike, this could prove to have a
prolonged and painful impact - and, for some companies and business
sectors, an irrecoverable one.

Most likely to be hard-hit first are airlines, hotels, resorts,
vacation-package companies, travel agents, coach tour companies, cruise
operators - the expected front-line casualties. But close behind will
be the myriads of other businesses, large and small, that directly or
indirectly depend upon them - restaurants, limousine operators, gift
shops, convention centers, etc.

The propects are looking steadily bleaker. The temptation to do nothing
and hope that the problem will just 'go away' must be overwhelming. But
business survival, if future circumstances even permit it, requires
forward planning now. Without an effective contingency plan, travel and
hospitality companies reduce their own already-slimming chance of
survival to a near-perfect zero certainty.

US and UK doctors warn that they are incapable of dealing with an avian
flu pandemic, and the U.S. is told that it is completely unprepared.
Meanwhile, more bird flu cases are reported, and the virus continues to
spread, heightening the fear of a fast-moving global pandemic.
